Our current Studies

1) The functions of plant hormones, particularly Jasmonic acid and Abscisic acid , in climacteric and non-climacteric fruit.
2) The identification of substances that influence Free Radical Scavenging Activity in the fruit, and to determine the methods of cultivation which result in high free radical scavinging activity.
3) The analysis of gene expression for anthocyanin (red pigment) accumulation in fruit.
4) The analysis of metabolism of plant hormones, particularily abscisic acid, during plant development.
5) The analysis of cell wall metabolism in fruit.
We are currently pursuing the above studies with the dedicated efforts of an undergraduate junior and senior and a foreign master student.

Together we successfully created the techniques for ripening European pears on the tree. Before our discoveries, these European pears could not be eaten directly from the tree after harvest. A patent is pending for these techiniques.
